Other Side of the Mirror: A Once Upon a Time fan podcast
Other Side of the Mirror is an unofficial Once Upon a Time fan podcast, with an emphasis on Regina/Evil Queen. This is our mp3 download page, visit our main website at othersideofthemirror.com!

We aren’t going to just summarize the show but we’re going to analyze and critique it. The show offers two types of episodes: Recaps, where we go through each episode, discussing any theories and thoughts we have about the plot and the characters, and Fan episodes, where we discuss various show topics, interview fans, chat about "ships" (ALL are welcome), and offer fan video and fanfic recommendations. We incorporate feedback throughout the podcast. If we really have strong thoughts about an episode, we'll record an instant reaction too! Language note: This is not a family friendly podcast. We use language you hear on the show and one "f" word when we read from a Once script. Share your feedback by visiting our website at http://othersideofthemirror.com calling our voicemail line at (970) 510-ONCE (6623) or by email to talk@othersideofthemirror.com. We’d love to hear your feedback, recommendations or topic ideas.

We took a one-week break from our Live Reaction Recaps to talk about The Savior, the premiere episode of Season 6 of Once Upon a Time:

This Week in Monotony: Belle & Rumple are stuck in the same story.

This Week in Monotony Part II: Emma & Hook are stuck in the same story.

This Week in Walls: Eddie and Adam are obsessed with Emma Swan's "walls" and it's literally destroying the character.

This Week in Something They Did Fairly Well: Zelena, Regina and Henry process the fallout from the death of Robin and Outlaw Queen.

This Week in Unsolicited Advice: Alex advises Hook to dump Emma, while Bri suggests Emma go an Eat, Pray, Love adventure.

This Week in Revisiting the Past: We feel like giving the show more credit for Ruby Slippers, given TV's really low LGBT bar.

We're back with a double episode live reaction to Sisters and Firebird!

Sisters gave us something we've wanted forever – sisterly development between Regina and Zelena, plus mother/daughter moments between Zelena and Cora! The actresses killed it. We almost died of feels, but recovered in time to watch Firebird.

A big thank you to our newest patrons, Emma and Hope!

This is our live reaction and recap to Ruby Slippers. Notes to come.

Comments[0]

This live reaction has us going from cynicism to puddles of feels by the end of the episode – a feat as rare as a great Once episode:

We discus the following:

  • All our feels.
  • Our preference for this Oz storyline over the one from season 3.
  • The incredible performance of Bex Mader & Greg German.

This a Live reaction and recap to The Brothers Jones. It was recorded while we watched. We had a great time this week discussing Mutiny! And other topics that grabbed out attention during this episode. Our thoughts include:

  • Henry being ready to star in a John Green novel (now casting: Manic Pixie Dream Girl)
  • Snow White's shabby chic style.
  • Hook's March Madness brackets going bust.
  • The discount version of Jeffrey Rush aka John Silver.
  • And whether CGI hair and waves took the place of Robin Hood in this week's budget.

SHOW NOTES

We have feedback from Raissa (regarding Greek mythology) and Karyn (our patron!) and voicemails from @ThatTownMonster (aka Rumple), and Danielle (Captain Swanner). Also we ask our listeners how the heck did Rumple and Milah meet? Why did they get married? Let us know your theories and head canons!

In our live reaction to Labor of Love, Alex's grumpiness about Hook goes away with the intake of Guinness and Girl Scout cookies and Bri's Snow White positivity. We discuss the pleasant reappearance of the story arc started with season 2's We Are Both and the continuity between Young Snow and Snow. We are unimpressed with everything going on with Emma, including her sniffing blood on that poison ivy leaf. We are in love with Regina's reactions to Snow White, the Blind Witch and Hades.

In this All Mailbag episode of Other Side of the Mirror, we check the pulse of the fandom and discuss the reaction to Season 5A. Included in this discussion are the following:

  • How fans define “Season 1”
  • Our amazement at the concept of characters and storylines being “on pause.”
  • An article from Entertainment Tonight where the creators discuss Dark Swan.
  • Closure??!
  • “A crime of opportunity” essentially meaning Rumple's gonna Rumple
  • How Season 5 would've gone if Rumple never reclaimed the Dark One mantle
  • How Season 5 would've gone if Emma had sacrificed herself instead of Hook

And most of all, great feedbag from these Oncers:

  • @VRNSwift (Strawberried)
  • Mo
  • Karyn
  • Hope
  • Jamie
  • Paige
  • Andrea
  • Raissa

This was our live reaction to Swan Song, season 5A's winter finale. We recorded this WHILE watching, so you can live our emotions as they happened. We probably laughed longer and harder about this episode than any episode in a long time, so we hope you enjoy it as much as we apparently did.

And there was also a side dish of righteous outrage, as we watched the show's final five minutes, where OUAT decided to Recycle ALL of the Plots and throw both Belle and Rumple under the bus once and for all.

Also: we play Parental Abandonment Bingo, ask the question “But did they have sex?”, use flawless logic to name the baby girl Cotton Mills, and establish a new “I Killed My Dad” Club (forgetting to make Regina a member in the process!)

This is our instant reaction to episodes 8 and 9 of season 5 of Once Upon A Time, Birth, and the Bear King. We begin with our disconnect with the character of Emma Swan and wonder why they reset her emotionally after every single season.

*Emma is freaking out because Hook was buying her a dream house? Emma has had to let her guard down for her parents, Henry, Ruby, August, Neal, Regina, Elsa, Lily – and Hook for like 4 seasons now. But she's still afraid of love? We call bs.

*We discuss Outlaw Queen and the lack of screen time, and touch on why Regina's character progression has been better than Emma Swan's.

With respect to whatever episode 9 was, we share an article from the show runners about what they thought they were actually doing and have a great laugh at their expense. We have many thoughts about watching the series for five years as members of the LGBT community, and none of them are very good. We rage.

*They promoted a thing (an LGBT relationship) that literally did not exist in this episode at all and then expect us to throw them a parade. No.

*We discuss the Netflix show Masters of None and how it's so good because it is written by people inside the cultures it is discussing; whereas Once is tone deaf and not created by anyone inside the LGBT community.

We ask for your support so that we can begin paying our contributors. Please visit us at https://www.patreon.com/whatthefangirl?ty=h

This is our full recap of the first two episode's of Once Upon a Time season 5: The Dark Swan and The Price. Among our topics for discussion are the different philosophies of life held by Rumple and the Charmings (including Emma), Emma's faith in Regina and why that faith did not work as she hoped it would, the various interpretations of True Love's Kiss, the implications of the JJ Abrams “mystery box” theory and how it impacts OUAT, and your feedback.

Topics include:

  • This week in Theology 101, Emma and Rumple represent two sides of a religious debate over fate and free will.

  • This week in Personal Philosophy 203, we discover that Regina doesn't actually like many people and discuss her biggest flaw.

  • This week on Days of Our Knives, Hook, Regina, Robin and Emma find themselves in a complicated quadrangle.

  • This week in the Study of Magical Objects, we renew our interest in magic-killing fitbits and the lore of will o' the wisps.

  • This week in Publisher's Weekly, we present a self-help books written by Rumple called “You Only Get One Chance” and a self-help book by the Charmings entitled, “Where there's a Will, There's a Way.

  • This week in Magical Theory, we realize that Belle is the only one who knows how to read.

  • This week in Swan Queen, we discuss the difference between Regina protecting Emma in season 3's Neverland compared to how she is protecting Emma now; as well as whether Regina understands her own limits.

This is our instant reaction to episode 3 of season 5 of Once Upon A Time, Siege Perilous, where every character tortured each other and the viewers. Even Bri and her magic shush-hands couldn't find the answer to the following questions:

1. How Evil Will King Arthur Be? Evil, Evil-Evil, Very Evil, or Once Upon a Time Level Evil?

2. Who's Going to be the Savior/Needed-Hero? Time to Play Spot The Red Herring!

3. Why are David and Arthur like Bjorn Borg and How Come Bri Couldn't Stop Alex from Talking About Tennis?

4. How much do we care about Camelot? A Little? A Modicum? A Lot?

5. Will Lancelot Come Between Charming and Snow? Answer is Hazy, Ask Again Later

6. How Many Second Chances Did Regina Get? 2? 22? or 222?

This is our instant recap of Once Upon a Time's second episode of season 5: The Price. (Attention Oncers: for five seconds we SHIPPED ALL OF THE THINGS!) This week we abandon our likes and dislikes to tease out some of the philosophical issues we hope to discuss in greater detail during our full recap of the first two episodes:

  • Is the best Regina can hope for “a good death?”

  • What is “the savior?”

  • Can Regina ever fully outmaneuver her past? Should she?

  • What the hell is a True Love's Kiss and who on this show are “Tru Wuvs?”

  • Are the fatal flaws of Emma, Hook, and Regina at times their greatest strengths?

Also WomanHood (TM Hope Mullinax), True Love's Magic 8 Ball, Xena, Care Bears, and Big Brother.

Housekeeping note – we're doing a full recap of the first two episodes together and we need your feedback and input on the season so far.

This is our instant reaction to The Dark Swan. Yes, we ARE season ticket holders to Once Upon a Time, so we felt compelled to return to the podcast. Today we covered our likes and dislikes, discussed our new kitten (Flynn Rider), announced the launch of our What The Fangirl (Whatthefangirl.com), talked about FairyTalez.com, and announced the launch of our store (http://shop.spreadshirt.com/whatthefangirl).

We missed you and greatly appreciate your participation.

Likes

1. The ensemble cast gets to stay together rather than being separated in different realms.

2. A fresh start is always welcome.

3. Snow, Regina, Baby Blanket. Feels.

4. Swan Queen.

5. Robin acknowledging that Zelena assaulted him. Also, Outlaw Queen.

Dislikes

1. A fresh start always sweeps away unfinished storylines and characters

2. Rumple/Belle is a thing that still exists.

3. Hook manipulating Henry

4. They're recycling their worst plot – Amnesia.

We return for a reaction podcast only. We find the Storybrooke moments soared, the fairybacks bombed, and the stortytelling plot is still a mess. But we did enjoy the actresses who play Ursula and Cruella, Rumple's couch-surfing, and Regina + Emma.

And so we find ourselves in the same position as the characters of Once Upon a Time at the End of Going Home. We bid you farewell, but in the words of Neal, we're certain we will see you again. This is our final episode exclusively about OUAT for the time being. Of course since it's the two of us, we discuss a lot of other shows on this one, including the surprising similarities between Once Upon a Time and Scandal. We discuss in brief four episodes culminating with the two-parter Smash the Mirror, which smashed our interest in the show.

On a personal note, Bri and I both greatly appreciate everyone who downloads this podcast, whether you give us feedback, think we are crazy, argue with us, or just lurk and listen. We love you all! Look for us next after Peter Pan Live, which airs on NBC in the States on December 4, 2014.

This is our full recap of Breaking Glass. It's also our 100th episode! Therefore it is fitting that we talk about Emma and Regina issues, since the show finally acknowledged that they have a relationship that transcends Henry.

This Week in Truthiness:  We fact check Regina's dubious claim that Emma never had her back.

This Week in It's Complicated:  Emma learns to articulate her feelings about Regina.

This Week in Emma Studies:  We grapple with the ramifications of Young Regina/Lily including the parallels with Neal.

This Week in Wardrobe: Elsa is still in her ball gown and so are a few million little girls.

This Week in Frozen:  We try but fail to understand what the Snow Queen's machinations were meant to achieve in this ep.

This Week in Disney:  Bri and Alex survive a trip to Walt Disney World, aka Arendelle South.

Show Notes:

There was no instant reaction nor will there be one!

We will be devoting a show to character analysis of Captain Hook so get your feedback and observations ready!

We were drinking wine, and so were the writers of Once Upon a Time, as we sat through a lot of plot that made not a lot of sense in the episode The Apprentice. We touch on what struck us in Rocky Road and shared your feedback.

 Topics include:

 Rumplestiltskin:  Special Dark Edition

Robin and Regina:  Things they could've actually talked about.

Newbies:  We like Will Scarlet and Alex is over Frozen.

Protip:  Don't bring a gun to a magic fight.

Wishful casting:  Joe Morton as Father of All Evil.

This is our instant reaction to Rocky Road, the third episode of season 4 of Once Upon a Time. This episode was surprisingly enjoyable for us and we found ourselves liking Elsa more. The Snow Queen was an instant like, and also up for discussion was..

 Likes

1. Comedic tone of the show

2. Relationship between Regina and Henry

3. Elizabeth Mitchell as Snow Queen was mesmerizing

4. Elsa and Kristoff -- all the Arendelle scenes - SVEN!

5. Side characters and Mary Margaret

6. Bri really liked scenes with Hook and Elsa

 7. David and Emma

 Dislikes

1. An evil character with a relationship to Rumple! Shocker!

2. No lines for Belle again!

3. Rumple and Belle's relationship and storyline are dead

4. It's disappointing that Marian isn't a three-dimensional character. She's a plot device.

5. The show's weird ideas/theories about true love - don't really add up and keep changing = you can fall out of love with your true love. Or is it she wasn't his true love to begin with? Because that's a retcon.

This is our full discussion of White Out, the second episode of season 4 of Once Upon a Time. We talk a little bit about the sudden media interest in Frozen on OUAT, analyze that deleted scene between Regina and Snow and manage to cover a few other things such as:

This Week in Sudden Onset Media Coverage of OUAT:  Slate.com weighs in with lots of thoughts on Frozen's takeover of OUAT.

This Week in Sudden Onset Media Coverage of OUAT II:  Slate.com thinks Regina and Emma routinely argue with each other and then cry with each other.

This Week in Henry:  Jared Gilmore gets a storyline.

This Week in Storybrooke Town Politics:  The deleted scene invalidated the three-person election of Snow as Mayor.

This Week in Storybrooke Town Mayoral Succession: Snow becomes Mayor by original Storybrook Town Rule "You break it, you buy it."

This Week in the Queen's Conscripts: We draft Frostopher to perform as an expert witness on our next book club episode.

This Week in Listener Feedback:  Multiple views on Hook and Emma, thoughts on Frozen and Neverland, theories on David's father and more!

Having repeatedly uttered the phrase "Bo Peep Warlord," we are now officially on Humpty Dumpty Watch! And we are also counting down our likes and dislikes for Once Upon a Time's episode, White Out, which include:

Likes

1. Josh Dallas and his bad wig did a nice job in Enchanted Forest and looked mighty fine in Storybrooke.

2. Henry's storyline with Regina and Emma was the most (only?) memorable thing from the episode.

3. Anna is just so good and the actress is achieving a lot by making the role her own.

4. Someone finally asked Emma why she has powers.

5. Snow White finally knows why Regina turned evil:  the dwarves.

Dislikes

1. Barely Any Regina! *Tantrum*

2. Why didn't they call Regina to melt the ice? She literally throws fireballs!

3. The Enchanted Forest is the Smallest Small Town Ever.

4. How are you feeling about the ratio of Frozen to non-Frozen?

5. Dear Hook:  She's just not that into you.

A big thank you to those who rated us on iTunes!

There were things to like about the season 4 premier, A Tale of Two Sisters, particularly the dynamite scenes with Regina and Emma. We don't spend much time discussing Frozen. And we are unconvinced that Emma has feelings for Hook. Also up for discussion:

This Week in the Best Fairy Tale on the Show:  Regina and Emma.

This Week in Bad Regina:  We admonish Regina for keeping Sydney

This Week in We Have to Talk About Henry:  His moms are kissing men with no hands and stuff.

This Week in Reindeer Lore:  Alex is writing fan fiction about Sven joining Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

This Week in Fun with Fonts:  Comic Sans, Courier New and Wing Dings.

This week in Alex & Bri:  Apparently there can be no podcast without Care Bears or Xena.

This Week in Feedback:  Fantastic ideas by Aleana, Leslie, Hannah, Shary and Nonnie.

This is our instant reaction to A Tale of Two Sisters, the Season 4 premier of Once Upon a Time. Bri was not exactly into this episode or the Frozen storyline and for once, Alex was urging patience while the story develops. This episode involved magical entrails, the Michelin Man and the computer game Myst. We discussed our likes, dislikes and casting thoughts, including:

Likes

Regina's quest to rewrite the storybook!

We were right about the resolution of Marian, Robin and Regina!

Sidney returns!

Regina and Emma are Regina and Emma!

Rumple's speech at the grave!

Dislikes

The glacial pace and how Frozen dominated the core characters.....

Trolls.... grumble grumble...

Rumple is Rumple.....

The introduction of another mystery person....

Belle squatting in the mansion that just happened to come over in the curse...

Casting

Anna - Yay!

Elsa - Maybe!

Kristoff - Nay!

That said we think it's important to give them all a chance as this is only the beginning.

This is our summary of the last two episodes of Once Upon a Time's third season, Snow Drifts and There's No Place Like Home. There wasn't a whole lot of new material or development during the two hour block, so we have included your feedback on the entire season including the following:

We discuss the positive points of the finale beginning with an email from Aleana. We share two perspectives on Hook courtesy of Lisa and Denise and give our opinion on some of the issues with Hook that have divided the fandom.

We hear from Eric who has some great ideas on how the show should create their next villian.

We hear from Raissa with some killer points on the history of Beauty and the Beast, why the ship should have been a super couple, and why Rumple is now a Macguffin.

Erin shares her opinion of replacing Wicked with Frozen.

We give an anonymous commenter our best pitch on why they should watch season 4.

We answer the following questions from Tumblr:

Here's some questions for your Season 3 Recap:

(1) What was your favorite episode of Season 3 and why? What was your least favorite episode of Season 3 and why?

(2) If you could change anything about Season 3, what would it be?

(3) A lot of people, including myself, view "Going Home" as the show's series finale - the ending of the show we fell in love with. Do you also feel this way?

(4) Season 3 was filled with so many missed opportunities, especially 3B. What do you think was the worst missed opportunity/the missed opportunity that you think had the most potential?

(5) Seeing as how there are so many new characters being added to Season 4 - if you could kill off/get rid of any current OUAT character (excluding those yet to be introduced), who would it be?

Thank you much for the great feedback and questions, it really was the only way we possibly could have recapped the 2 hour finale!

This is our full recap of Bleeding Through, which was the last episode we recorded before viewing the Season 3 finale. We spend the majority of the podcast analyzing the major character moments for Regina and Snow. Along the way we tried to reckon with the way the show characterizes Cora vs Leopold and Jonathan and wonder if a pattern has emerged. See show notes.

This Week at the Crossroads, Cora Mills sells her soul to the Devil.

This Week at Ye Olde Royal Gazebo, the Gazebo becomes the temporary way station for Prince Jonathan, Prince Leopold and the Devil, who are approximately the same person.

This Week in Waitressing, Cora "can bring home the mozzarella sticks, fry them up in a pan, start her own fire and never let you forget you're a man......"

This Week at Rumple's Little Shop of Horrors, Belle is a total rock star and tells Regina to stuff it.

This Week in Amazing Character Developments, Regina and Snow have arrive at a new understanding of each other and their history.

This Week in Fails, Leopold fails to convince Bri and Alex that he is the Prince of Purity.

This Week in Convenient Plot Points, Zelena knows the exact coordinates of Regina's heart; Regina can put a spell on her heart so Zelena can't control it (but can't conceal the heart or change it into something else.)

Show Notes:

There are two etchings in Regina's study in this episode which directly relate to the themes of the episode. The first, Pygmalion is Enamored with a Statue He Had Made involves Pygmalion. Pygmalion was a sculptor who thought girls were icky. So he sculpted a statue of Venus and fell in love with it. She turned into a real woman and loved him back. He molded her completely to be an obedient, silent woman.

Semele is Consumed by Jupiter's Thunder involves Semele and Jupiter aka Zeus. The married god Zeus seduced commoner Semele and got her pregnant. Before she could give birth to their son Dionysus, Zeus' wife Hera turned her to ash. But then Zeus reconstituted Dionysus in his thigh and later Dionysus grows up and reconstitutes Semele.

Both of these stories resonate for this episode, but beyond that, amplify some concerning issues that come up on OUAT.

If we were creating a study guide for this episode, we would ask students the following:

Is there a particular reason why the revelations about Leopold, Cora and Ava cause the women to reevaluate their knowledge and understanding of their mothers and themselves and even Zelena, but does not cause them to reconsider Leopold?

Does the show actually repudiate the attitudes of Prince Jonathan and Prince Leopold or does it reinforce them?

Today we're reacting to the special 2 hour finale of Once Upon a Time, the episodes Snow Drifts and There's No Place Like Home. We are also proud to announce a new venture, What the Fangirl, which is a media and pop culture podcast and website that we want you all to contribute to. Go to www.WhatTheFangirl.Com for more information.

These episodes gave us a lot to digest, but these are some of the things we talked about:

Likes:

·         Jennifer Morrison was the MVP.

·         Finally a flashback's to Emma's past!

·         Neal scenes surprised us and were well done.

·         Snow and Charming's moments in SB and Enchanted Forest.

·         The show's strength is pitching high concepts, beginnings and endings.

·         Regina called out Emma on moving to NYC.

Dislikes:

·         Unhappy Regina once again drives the story.

·         Didn't Robin know Regina was responsible for Marian's death? What's the deal?

·         We missed Henry playing a crucial role in the finale, so subbing Hook for Henry didn't work for us.

·         Blood vials and white magic portals and fairy godmothers, oh my!

·         Hook and the Blurred Lines

·         Regina vs Emma??? Please spare us this storyline.

·         We had both good and bad to say about Rumbelle

·         There was no Zelena and the Oz plot disappeared!

Show Notes:

We have questions for you about the season:

  • How did the stuff with Hook strike you?
  • Were you disappointed with Oz?
  • In what way did the show shift its emotional orientation? Or did it?
  • Where are we going from here - both literally and otherwise?
  • Will you #keepwatching?

This is our instant reaction to Kansas. Once again this episode reminded us that we are really spoiled as Regina fans.

Likes:

1. Regina's confidence was inspired by Henry with an assist from Emma and a nod from Robin Hood.

2. Regina's decision to not kill Zelena.

3. Oz and the Divine Secrets of the Ta-Ta Sisterhood.

4. The Charming Family scenes.

5. The proposal – when in doubt, forget the ring, propose with a knife!

6. Continuity. They're sure consistent with Regina but see #5 below.

Dislikes:

1. Emma keeps talking only to Hook about Henry's future. We cannot sit through one more scene between Hook and Emma about taking Henry to New York. Hook is right every time, but where is Regina?

2. We've had enough of Mixed Message Emma. And so has Hook. And so has Regina.

3. Emma not getting her magic back. Unless she's lying about that...

4. Rumple's betrayal.

5. Continuity. They're inconsistent with the plot points. Remember the Black Fairy's wand?

Our Questions for You:

1. Where is Dorothy now?

2. Where are we going next?

3. Does Emma really have no more magic?

This is our full late recap of Jolly Roger. We found this Hook-centric episode just so-so, but it featured some really nice moments and we had a blast recapping it.

This Week in Belle the Cat: Yes, Alex did call her Rumple-Bumple and she steals things from the cabinets.

This Week on House Hunters: Snow and Prince Charming are shopping for an abode fit for a future king, but will it work for their adult, same-age daughter Emma, her son Henry AND Snow's ex-wicked step-mother Regina, who happens to be Henry's other mom?

This Week in Captain Swan: Hook has feelings for Emma and Emma has feelings for Hook and they include yes, no and maybe. If there are problems with the relationship so far, we feel they are caused by the confusing and inconsistent characterization of Emma rather than Hook.

This Week in Swan Queen: Regina re-indoctrinates Emma into the Magical Lifestyle, complete with the Magic Tackle Box, Vault, Clawed Gloves, and the Kabbalah.

This Week in Happy Endings: Ariel and Prince Eric actually get one.

Listener Feedback really rounded out this episode and we greatly appreciate your contributions to this one.

This is our instant reaction to the episode A Curious Thing. We watched this episode after visiting Chicago’s “big comic thingy,” as Alex calls it (also known as c2e2), which is also why we’re behind on our recaps. We appreciate your feedback and will get to all of it!

Our likes and dislikes include:

Likes:

1.    Regina broke the curse by kissing Henry!

2.    Snow White and Prince Charming were great together! Charming was self-sacrificing and Snow was on point tonight.

3.    Lana’s acting in those scenes with Snow and Charming was just exquisite.

4.    The ways Emma and Regina have changed places was underscored nicely by Emma’s desire to keep the truth from Henry while Regina wanted him to just believe and break the curse.

5.    It makes sense to us that Regina is trying to find ways to be happy and move forward even though her future with Henry was over or ambiguous. That’s character growth.

Dislikes:

1.    Swapping out the magical necklace from Clare’s Jewelry at the Fairytale Land Mall will defeat Zelena?  Regina can just split the hearts?  Everyone is a monkey? Feels like sloppy and random plotting.

2.    If you are a person who struggles with liking Emma, then tonight was probably fuel for your fire. Even though we can reconcile it by saying she’s understandably conflicted, she needs to learn to appreciate what is in front of her including that family she fought so hard to get.

3.    Disappointed that Robin Hood and Regina didn’t fall in love in the Enchanted Forest. Alex really wanted to see them flesh out Robin’s character, especially after Bleeding Through, which had nice moments for the couple.

4.    The way we’re skipping over the missing year is beyond disappointing! So nothing happened between Snow finding out she was pregnant and when they found Galinda?

5.    Nothing happened to Emma during the missing year, including her memories of Henry that Regina gave her, that are worth portraying on the show???

This is our instant reaction to Bleeding Through. As usual, here are our five likes and dislikes:

Likes

Belle calling out Regina for holding her captive and ruining her life, and Regina's response.

Regina and Snow For the Win!

Everything Young Cora including her mad Applebees waitressing skills and her milkshake.

Emma embracing her magical lifestyle.

The show hasn't given Regina a substitute family.

Dislikes

King Leopold:  Sleazy Bill Wyman of Once.

The route traveled to get Regina and Robin Hood together was way too basic; but we didn't dislike the result of this episode.

Emo Hook.

So that Rumple and Zelena kiss happened (but we still like Zelena)

Alex goes on about Mulan (again) while discussing gross Leopold and monkey boyfriends.

Blackbeard made us Black-Bored. Meh.

Emma doesn't even care about Hook lying about the last year. Nope.

This is our full recap of It's Not Easy Being Green. The major revelations in the episode were that the Wizard is Walsh and Zelena really is Regina's sister. Our observations include:

This Week in Captain Hook: Hook invades Emma's personal space but we can't disagree with his assessment of Henry.... or his acumen with eyeliner.

This Week in Questions: The Walsh reveal gave us so many questions! Will we get answers, or are these just plot holes?

This Week in The-Plot-Thickens: Did Regina decide to trust Robin with her heart? Is she testing him with a fake heart? Is he playing her? Is she playing him? Or is this just true love? We dive in with help from listener feedback.

This Week in Frozen Analogies: Zelena is born with magic but can't control it and grows up ashamed of her powers.

This Week in Father Figures: Regina's big emotional moment had more to do with her relationship with Rumple than it did any displacement from discovering Cora had another child.

Notes:

Regina wore Victoria Beckham during the diner scene. You can find out where they got the clothes for Belle, Regina, Emma and Snow on WornOnTV.net.

Our review of Sebastian Stan on Broadway was episode #23, This Hiatus is No Picnic.

This is our instant reaction to It's Not Easy Being Green. In this episode you learn what we would do if we found a baby in a basket on our front door step, which show runner from the past we throw shade on and you find out which pickup lines do not work on Bri. Our various likes and dislikes include:

Likes

1.  Neal actually had a funeral and we PRESUME the ramifications of his death will continue to be felt.

2.  Belle was part of the group.

3.  Regina vs. Zelena lived up to its billing

4.  Wardrobe and set design were great.

5.  The Rumple/Regina dynamic

6. The references to The Wizard of Oz movie were well done.

Neutral

Alex's lucky guess Oz was Walsh came true, but we're still a little disppointed nobody ever turns out to be just a normal guy. It's a good twist but what about Dr. Whale?

Dislikes

1. The trust between Regina and Robin wasn't earned and that made it feel out of character.

2. More backstory for Zelena is needed.

3. The theories from season 1 about Dr. Whale aren't true.

4. Alex wonders about the sustainability of the show's patterns long-term.

Feedback

We thank Michael for his good catch on the scenes between Regina/Snow and Zelena/Regina and play two voicemails from Christopher and Nonnie.

Dislikes

They killed Neal when he had interesting motives

Robin Hood just happens to be in the right place at the right time again

This is our full recap of The Tower, featuring your feedback, voicemails, tweets and a new Unified Theory of Robin Hood! The Tower was about facing your fears and keeping up appearances. Charming and Rapunzel faced their fears, and we think Zelena, Robin Hood and Hook are very concerned with keeping up appearances.

This Week in Fairytale Land:  Charming and Emma had a Daddy/Daughter dance and Emma said Yes to the Dress.

This Week on Nancy Drew:  Henry starts to suspect Emma is hiding something and Charming, Emma, Hook and Regina play CSI.

This Week on Filler:  We meet Rapunzel and she gets a happy ending for once.

This Week in Your Feedback:  We get a rundown on the characters' Patronuses, we hear about unhappy Rumbellers and fans less than thrilled with Captain Swan, we get a great theory about Regina's father, we get great feedback about the Scarecrow/Lion/Tin Man and much, much more.

Our Unified Theory of Robin Hood, which Bri also called Hook and Hood and It's Not Good, originated from several viewers on Twitter and by Email:

  • Fennec Wolf
  • Heck L 45
  • Myrealname
  • 25ka253

This is our instant reaction to The Tower, which introduced Rapunzel to the world of Once Upon a Time. We had quite a few likes and a couple of dislikes:

Likes

1. The show continues to bring the creepy.

2.  We were overdue for a David episode and there was David and Emma stuff, which again was long overdue.

3. The characters continued to have real conversations about things!

4. The show incorporated lots of Oz elements into the story.

5. This representation of facing one's fears was stronger than the Bridge or Regrets or Tree of Secrets or whatever the heck happened back in Neverland.

6. Rapunzel got a happy ending!

7. The Regina and Henry scene!

8. New exotic Storybrooke locales!

Dislikes

1. This is not a knock on Robin Hood but why do he and other "guest stars" continue to get more screen time than Belle? This ep gave us more of Belle as a pawn in someone elese's game.

2. Alex GOES IN on Hook's attitude!

FEEDBACK!

We share your feedback. Including voicemails, emails, and blog questions about whether Regina has been redeemed, your theories about Zelena's bio parents, your theories about the Charming baby, your theories about the curse, your feels about Swan Queen, thoughts about Outlaw Queen, questions and much more!

This week is another double recap as we walk through the major events of New York City Serenade and Witch Hunt, including:

New York City Serenade

In our full recap of New York City Serenade we talk about the many parallels with the Pilot but also with Snow and Regina's relationship in the Evil Queen, (our Evil Queen recap is podcast episode 48), we address Walsh going ape and we wish for a map of Fairytale Land.

This Week in Emma's Suitors: Hook looks like a Leather Daddy, Walsh wants to put a ring on it, Regina and Neal are MIA.

This Week in Unanswered Questions: What happened if you died in Storybrooke, are you alive now? Is it like Storybrooke never happened? Is August a boy or a man? Is that why Rumple is alive? Cora? Graham?

This Week in Charmings: Snow and Charming have very different responses to Neal and Hook while counseling everyone

This Week in Tasting Her Own Medicine: Regina experiences what Snow went through when giving up her child.

This Week in Precocious Rom-Com Kids: Henry is a prime candidate for setting a parent trap.

Witch Hunt

In our recap of Witch Hunt, we address the Swan Queen moments including Jennifer Morrisson's new acting choices toward Regina, as well as the consistency in Robin Hood's character in Quite a Common Fairy and Witch Hunt. There are a suprising number of Sleeping Beauty references. And Also Alex has a theory about Regina that won't make anyone happy.

This Week in Regina:  Regina saves another child the same way she did Snow White.

This Week in Tasting Her Own Medicine:  Zelena wouldn't kill Regina just like Regina wouldn't kill snow.

This Week in Bail Bonds:  The citizens of Storybrooke begin to reveal themselves to Henry as being guilty of crimes like Banditry and Piracy.

This Week in New Businesses:  The Merry Men visit Jack Sprat's Sporting Goods.

This Week in Parallels:  Witch Hunt is contrasted with Broken and Emma/Regina are contrasted with Cricket Game.

This Week in Rewrites:  Robin Hood gets Jefferson's storyline.

This Week in Star Trek: Dr. Whale gets his Jim McCoy moment.

Show Notes:

Thank you Laura for the Gifset!

The bit with Rumple at the end refers to the scene with Regina and Rumple in Quite a Common Fairy where Rumple tells Regina "the darkness feasts on you."

ABC owns the rights to Wicked.

Comments[0]

This is the instant reaction to Episode 13 of Season 3, Witch Hunt. This was a history making episode for us because Belle Mayhem joined the fandom and we did not have any dislikes.

Loves:

This felt like season 1 in its tone, pacing, character moments, slice of life.

Sister Act!

The Wicked Witch is a hoot (Bex Mader is playing WW with a little Patsy from Ab Fab).

Bri loved seeing all the old characters back and we know she wasn't alone.

Regina wearing her mourning outfit was a great choice.

Emma and Regina got to talk about their son!

Jennifer Morrison really brought some new looks to her scenes with Regina.

Rumple?!?

Theories and Thoughts

Is Rumple Zelena's father or is it someone else?

How did Robin accidentally get Maid Marion killed?

Did Walsh really date Emma before he was a monkey?

Who summoned Hook? Who made the potion?

Alex will gladly trade the drawves for the Merry Men, Bri disagrees.

Show Notes

Our cat Ivy flopped her ears loudly at minute 7:32 because she's sick of Belle appearing on the podcast. So we acknowledge that Princess Ivy is a thing.

In this Very Special 75th Episode of Other Side of the Mirror, we recap Think Lovely Thoughts and Going Home. Although there was one episode between these two, they fit together because of the character arcs of Rumple and Regina.

Think Lovely Thoughts

This Week In the House of Rumpelstiltskin: We give a quick refresher on the Three Spinners, witness three generations of Rumpelstiltskins trying their hand at fatherhood; imagine Belle and Rumple at a marriage counselor; imagine Malcolm on the show 16 and Pregnant; and praise the heck out of Neal for standing up to his dad.

This Week In Casa Charming: We imagine Snow and Charming on House Hunters International; witness two generations of Charmings ever ready to make deals with Rumple; and Alex says “Snow I''mma let you finish BUT....”

This Week in the Mills Family: Emma and Regina are fighting evil by moonlight and ripping hearts out by daylight; Henry is starring in an After School Special about Peer Pressure; and Regina has enough character growth to appear on Oprah's Sunday Soul Day

And This Week in Analysis: Rumple's journey makes us think of Wordsworth's “the child is father of the man.” We also sense a dark/light parallel in Neal/Emma and Regina/ Rumple, with notes on both Swan Fire and Swan Queen.

Going Home

This Week in Plot: The Shadow gets charbroiled; Tink stumps for Captain Swan; Blue Fairy Lives!; there are scrolls and body swaps and magic bracelets and daggers.

This Week in Life Lessons: Biology does not make a parent!

This Week in Parallels: Regina and Rumple pay the ultimate price for their sons.

This Week in Rumbelle: Whyyyyyy...

This Week in Regina and Emma: We chart the holy cow amazing growth between Regina and Emma. Regina learns empathy for how she wrecked Emma's life! Regina pushed Emma to become a leader! Emma deferred to Regina during the entire third season including leaving with Henry!

This Week in Rants: Regina realizes that Emma did not have a good life because of the curse, so she decides to give her one. We discuss the implications of that and wonder why this show is promoted as if it's Once Upon a Time: Passions Edition. This show is about the balance between light and dark.... how can this not be a theme in promotion?

Time Stamps

00:00 - 04:00 Revisiting The Three Spinners and The Miller's Daughter.

04:00 - 42:00 Recap of Think Lovely Thoughts

42:30 - 1:01:00 Recap of Going Home

1:01:00 - 1:17:00 Emma, Regina and the themes of OUAT

We're counting down our likes and dislikes from the return of Season 3, Episode 12, New York City Serenade. They include:

Bonus Likes and Dislikes! Before we launch into the show we announce our hatred for ABC's Resurrection promos and our enjoyment of the OUAT highlights show. Onward!

Likes

*Snow and Regina's relationship has evolved and it is awesome!

*Emma's new surroundings and all of the things and memories and emotions Regina created for her (FEELS)

*The tone of the show has shifted into new territory, the main characters continue to work together, the reset seems promising.

*We were unspoiled so it did not feel predictable. There's a new mystery plus the flying monkey surprised us!

*Neal wanting to find a way back to Henry and Emma (but warning, Alex's support for Neal will probably doom the character)

Dislikes

*Alex is bored by Aurora and Philip and questions Aurora's life choices

*Bri misses some characters like Rumple and Mulan, plus Henry did not have his memories yet

*The timing of Robin Hood and Regina (but we're keeping an open mind)

*Mini-rant about Adam and Eddie treating Jamie Dornan like the girlfriend they dumped but now want back ! (it's toooooo late....knock it off!)

Thank You!

A big thank you to those who donated to our microphone fund, especially Amanda, Priscilla and Cheryl!! Send us your address and we'll send you some swag! We love all our listeners, regardless of whether you donated, you make doing the show worthwhile.

Because we like to zig when you think we're going to zag... this episode is about what Once Upon a Time does right!

Watching an episode of Intelligence got us thinking about all the reasons we enjoy Once.

Are we grading on a curve? Only until the hiatus ends!

These are our six gold stars:

1. Inventive Premise is Inventive!

2. Character Growth. The show doesn't get the cache it should for showing dramatic character arcs and making us change our minds about the characters.

3. Villainy! We like that OUAT doesn't apologize for creating nuanced villains with both good and evil traits.

4. They represent fairy tales fairly accurately. Fairy tales are crazy.

5. Adam Horowitz's engagement on Twitter.

6. Relationship between Regina/Emma/Henry should be celebrated. We also like the numerous roles for women.

All that and our review of Frozen.

Notes:

Bri wrote a book with Jessica Burkhart, Keep it Chic and Cheap, 35 Ways to Update Your Space. It's designed for tweens but anyone can use these tips to spruce up their space without ripping the walls down.

Her columns on movies are at NetflixClub.com.

In our full recap of Save Henry, we analyze the evolution of Emma and Regina's relationship including the total trust the two women demonstrated during this episode. We also discuss the difference between regret and remorse and ask why this discussion can't also apply to Rumple.

This Week in Answered Questions:  Magic 8 Ball revealed the answer to what Regina intended to do with Baby Emma (kill her!), revisited the issue of Mr. Gold's memory (reply hazy, try again later), but the story of Henry's adoption was decidedly incomplete (better not tell you now).

This Week in Minor Characters:  Hey, let's discuss Archie!

This Week in Old TV:  Henry is like Timmy from Lassie.

This Week in Product Placement:  Sandals Resorts scored the coveted Once Upon a Time product placement! Tab, Walkman and Tang reacted with jealousy.

This Week in Podcast Hosts: Bri declares that everyone needs therapy in Storybrooke  and Alex vanquishes a certain website's Regina-haters.

This Week in Grades:  Snow is given a "has trouble staying on task" and Alex calls the episode "somewhat satisfying," which Bri explains translates to a solid "B."

Notes

Is Regina's reference to the game Space Paranoids a secret reference to the Kitsis/Horowitz graphic that plays at the end of each episode?

We're planning a Best/Worst of 2013 episode. What were the things you loved most in 2013?

This is the instant reaction for episode 11 of Season 3, Going Home! We discuss the fact that the OnceVerse clearly has no well defned rules, which leads to magical coconuts, shady math and plot holes. But the lack of rules also allows for a series reset that we are excited to see. There was also an extended discussion of the promo for the next episode and we have our first theory of what it means.

Our likes and dislikes include:

Likes

1. Emma/Regina - the stakes are so high, the scenes are so poignant, the acting superb. REGINA GIVING EMMA A HAPPY ENDING ZOMG! Why isn't the show boasting about this unique relationship?!?

2. Robbie Kaye and Robert Carlyle and their characters. Worst dad ever!

3. The last scene in NYC... We loved the reprise of Charlie's Girl. Loved Original Recipe Emma! 1 YEAR LATER. Yes we love the time jump.

4. Acting is great. The show's actors are so good the show doesn't need dumb plot machinations.

5. There be Swan Queen afoot....

Dislikes

1. Alex is mystified that ABC is mystified about how to promote Once and think that Sexy Hook is the only promotable thing.

2. There aren't any rules in the OnceVerse. Plot holes and dumb shortcuts are making a mess. Take heart Rumbelle, nobody stays dead!

3. Unresolved threads. What about Felix? Felix and Pan? Darlings? Lost Boys? Owen?

4. Hook is just eh.

5. We will be waiting until March 14.....

In this week’s podcast we discuss season 3’s Dark Hollow, which provided us with lots of laughs, a few minor rants and a startling defense of Neal’s determination to be in Henry’s life. Other than that this episode was totally inane.

This week on Once Upon an Under the Dome:  the same CGI protective shield that sliced up the cow in CBS’ Chesters Mill migrates to ABC’s Storybrooke to slice the bumper off the hipster's car.

This week in dubious plot points: we continue the trend of randomly imbuing objects with magical properties. Last week’s ikea coconut is this week’s hologram sand dollar!

This week in #SaveHenry:  Team Charming for the Fail! And Team Evil for the Win!

This week in Triangle Talk: Emma would rather go to Rainbow Cove. Paging Regina…

This week in Hook-has-ants-in-his-pants:  Stupid. Inane. I can't.

This week in Regina:  we’re still more interested in Regina than non-Regina. So deal.

Notes:

Bri recommends three fan videos, all set to the same Kate Bush song. For Regina/Daniel (by IdtProductions2), for Swan Queen (by tmk) for Jefferson (by Valentina Zemlyanaya).

NOTE:  We’re planning a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode for the hiatus. Help us choose an episode for us to offer commentary on!

In this full recap of episode 5, Good Form, we revisit the dynamics between Emma, Regina and Snow and deconstruct the various romances and bromances. The parallel episodes were Lady of the Lake and We are Both. We also discuss an article about Sleepy Hollow by tv critic Maureen Ryan about shows that are BonkersAwesome, a concept which also applies to Once.

This week in Neverland Past: Killian Jones is a very pretty poodle; the Jones Brothers journey to Care-A-Lot; Killian mourns the loss of Captain Hubris by converting to Pirate-Anarchist.

This week in Neverland Present: David and Hook take a trip to Brokeback Mountain, Snow Boone traps a Lost Boy; Hook is up all night to get lucky, and Pan is up all night to have fun.

This week in Swan Queen:  Henry is still having a miserable time at Pan Camp; Emma chooses Regina over Snow; Regina goes dark so Emma won’t have to; and Emma still chooses to kiss Hook because reasons.

This week in Alex and Bri:  We fret over the hygiene and eating habits of the Oncevengers; we remind you again about Enchantacon; and Alex joins the Frankenmuth Michigan Chamber of Commerce.

We have feedback and insights from Raissa, Aleanna, Ruby, Drew, Natalia, Jonathan, Christopher, Nonnie and Hope.

Plus a voicemail from Chirstopher with food for thought about the possibility Leopold told Snow she was the prettiest of them all, while denying Regina, his wife, any love at all.

This is the full recap for Nasty Habits, the fourth episode of season three of Once Upon a Time. This episode is our instant reaction to Quite a Common Fairy, which is surely the most controversial episode ever of Once Upon a Time. We attempt to do our traditional five likes and five dislikes but framed that discussion around the following question - can you enjoy an episode but still hate what it means about the direction of the show? We want your answers.

And play along with us as we reveal the answers to these scintillating questions!

  • Which character did Alex say is a mushy piece of crap?
  • Which character does the show REALLY consider the dark one?
  • What is the ONE THING the show has done right this season?
  • Which television trope did the show just double down on?
  • What is the ONE THING that Bri and Alex have been right on along?
  • Which character did the show decide to go ALL IN on?
  • Which soap star does Lana Parrilla have the most in common with?

In this full recap of episode 3, Lost Girl, we deconstruct the current state of the Regina / Emma relationship (it’s complicated), diagnose the main problem with the war for the throne (we don’t know anything about Leopold or his kingdom) and praise the show for most of its Neverland direction.

This week in Neverland: Regina can't find the Marriott; Hook auditions to be Emma's boyfriend; Rumple channels Cat Stevens; Pan trolls everyone; Snow turns into Hover Mom; and Hook and David have a Brodown.

Meanwhile, in Flashback Land:  Snow snaps into Braveheart mode; Bambi photobombs Snow and Charming; the dwarfs become official groupies; Medieval Cher trolls the Shepherd; Rumple picks up another trophy; and David lies to start a war and is rewarded with a makeout session.

This week in the Rumpleverse:  Belle continues to play Imaginary Skipper to Rumple’s Barbie; Rumple’s Shadow buries the dagger; and Rumple confronts his past by trying to destroy his doll.

The show rebounded this week with an episode we really enjoyed from start to finish! Our instant reaction includes eight likes and three dislikes:

Likes: Emma's an Orphan; Pan wants to alienate Henry from his family; Parallels between Snow and Emma; So much shallow, so little time!

The Dwarves protecting Snow; The Charmings are total hover parents; Characters are realizing they are CHARACTERS IN STORIES! Emma and Regina trust each other but have a lot awkward

Dislikes: The Charmings vs Evil Queen, once more same as before; an offered Rumple a deal? Wait what???? No story for Belle

In our first full recap of the season, we discuss the major questions posed by the episode, including whether Regina sees herself as a villain, what Neal revealed about the Law of Traveling by Portals and the way exposition is used to launch new shows. Other topics include:

Alex was impressed that Charming was going to blow up some mermaids; Bri was reminded of Spongebob; a few moments of Evil Charming; “Shakespeare's Robin Hood”; Neal's Snow Globe and Foghorns. So many foghorns.

Generally we do five likes and five dislikes, but in this case we forgot to count!   Dislikes:  Our biggest dislike was Neal – everyone getting schmoopy over Neal, Mulan/Aurora/Philip only existing to prop up Neal, the Neal/Emma romance – all of it was like watching a brand new unappealing show.

We were disappointed with the show's decision to go all in on Emma v. Regina over Henry. Killing Tamara in that awful way, without answering any questions about the entire story arc from season 2 just makes us feel like no question will ever be answered.

Where is Belle? Is she only allowed out when Rumple needs her?  Also Robin Hood. Who even cares?

Likes:  Our likes included people discussing their baggage! Jared Gilmore/Henry getting a great storyline! Neverland so far! Snappy Regina lines! Mulan and Aurora exist!

We present a special summer episode. A minicast! Now we now know magic really does come with a price.... In this podcast we discuss the Dreaded Promo Pics Debacle! What are these photographs supposed to mean? Is the Once cast going back in time to 1990s Seattle? Will Emma appear on Toddlers & Tiaras? Are Rumple and Belle starring in a Harlequin Romance novel? Wait, is that Cher?!

Other topics include: Bri on one of her many Twitter questions to Adam Horowitz, Alex throws shade on Adam's obsession with calling Regina, and nobody else on the show, a “mass murderer," and in other promotion-related developments, the first trailer for season 3 reveals that ABC Promo Department thinks the entire show can be summed up by, “get out of my way, I'm gonna get my son!”

On this episode of the podcast we talk about TV in the Twitter Age! 2013's San Diego Comic Con is our jumping off point for discussion about the challenges facing showrunners and fans as the new critics. We're recapping the season 2 finale of Once Upon a Time! Well, it took 22 episodes but it seems Regina finally learned how to love. Topics include Granny and Her Crossbow should be an indie band from Canada, the Black Diamond Failsafe Switch O'Doom (TM), why we don't necessarily agree with the metaphor of Regina being an alcoholic, Regina vs Rumple: their paths to redemption, and we come full circle on Hook, discuss Regina writing a parenting blog, Bae, and more!

Live from our hotel room, in our instant reaction to Straight on Til Morning, we discuss our likes and dislikes plus our best prediction of the season, aka Henry could be Peter Pan. Likes include Regina's redemption feels earned, ALL THE THINGS between Henry and Regina! Emma and Regina! A lack of Tamara and Greg sucking face, Hook. Plus a bit of dislikes. Show Notes: In episode #44, our book club discussion for Peter Pan, we interviewed author Carey about her love for the novel. We also argued Henry should be Peter Pan. Look for Carey's novel "Doon" retelling Brigadoon in August 2013. Alex mentioned Jean Cocteau's surrealist masterpiece Beauty and the Beast, available on DVD through Criterion Collection.

In this our 50th episode we thought it was only fitting to feature your feedback/tweets/voicemails throughout the recap and at the end. We make this podcast for the fans and this would be no fun without your contributions! Second Star to the Right was an entertaining wreck that made us realize the plot is now a giant corn maze. Other topics include:

*Magical Visine, mustache-twirling villainy and shipping; Bri comparing Second Star to the Right to the Buffy episode Becoming; Alex praising Lana's Soap Diva Acting, which is a talent for turning ludicrous plot points into sugar. See our tumblr post for our summary of your hilarious feedback for this episode!

In this recap of The Evil Queen, we discuss Regina and Snow and whether the show's constant flashbacks add to or detract from the arcs for the two characters. Also new this week:

*We analyze the scene between Henry and Regina with all the nuances we can muster

*Alex senses a dumbed down version of the Evil Queen in Fairytale Land

*Bri has an excellent recall of distant plot points like bankrupting King George has something to do with Abigail

*We imagine a world where Rumple and Regina judge Project Runway and Tamara is a member of the Westboro Baptist Church

*We also trash Gorton's fish sticks, mess around with bird feeders and speculate about the finale!

Another book club episode! This time we discuss J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan. Peter Pan – a selfish, impulsive boy who is also generous and brave. Peter longs for a mother figure, but wants that mother to meet his idea of perfection.

We think this is an obvious paralell to Henry, who holds other characters, including his mothers, to standards they have a hard time living up to. Topics include: Is anyone on the show really Wendy? The mysteries of Barrie's portrayal of Hook, and how Once's Hook stacks up. The idea of coming-of-age and Peter Pan, how do we see the show going to Neverland and more!

Plus feedback from Anika and Timespacer dissect Henry a bit more, while Sarah and Erin tell us what they did and didn't like from Welcome to Stoybrooke. Check out the show notes on othersideofthemirror.com for links to Carey's website, book series, etc.

In this recap of Selfless, Brave and True, we analyze how this episode fell apart and why August is a missed opportunity for both Emma and Neal.

What else are we talking about this week?

*Contributions by Hope, Nonnie, Eric, Pearl, Sarah, John, Aleanna, Erin, Kelly and Jeanne!

*Tamara's Taser of Doom!

*Wooden Swan shippers are sad. Wooden Thief shippers are sad. Swan Thief Shippers are happy. All other ships were ignored.

*If Alex and Bri talked like Tamara and Neal their dialogue would go something like this:

Alex:  You know the other day I was on Planet 9, so I didn't get the dishes done.

Bri:  This is something you're just making up because you're still in love with the Swan Girl!

Show Notes

Greg and Tamara instantly reminded Bri of Boris and Natasha.  Anyone want to tell us who the Rocky and Bullwinkle of Once Upon a Time would be?

In honor of the episode Welcome to Storybrooke, this recap features throwback intro music as performed by the Clovers. (Don't worry, it's a one-time only engagement....)

We begin by discussing how Welcome to Storybrooke is the bookend to the episode Queen of Hearts, which gave us the first Regina/Cora casket scene, the first documented use of heart-ventriloquism, Charming in yet another coma and a scene with Henry and his mothers at the well.

Other topics include:

It's 1983 but Regina does NOT have time for shoulder pads!

Alex goes all over the map (and then some) with old TV references – Lassie, Swingtown, the Twilight Zone, the X-Files, What Not to Wear, Siskel & Ebert at the Movies, and the saddest Dukes of Hazard episode ever.

Bri wonders why Graham's heart retained magical properties when there is no magic in Storybrooke!

A quick reminder that Gold enacted the curse and brought magic to Storybrooke, in order to get vengeance -- plus his son back... sound familiar?

We recorded before we got most of the feedback but we appreciate ALL of it and will discuss it during our next fan episode, coming soon...

Regina's existence in Storybrooke was missing love, camaraderie, and a challenge. 3. Herny speaks for us all. 4. We have no idea if Regina knows the dirt on Neal and vice versa. 5. We warn Adam H. not to make Greg Regina's love interest and more..

Our February book club episode! If you didn't know, we had a little problem with our internet for over a week, so this went up much later than expected. Once Upon a Time took off for the Oscars but thankfully Once fans do not take any time off! We share voicemails from Kelsey and Bri and Book Club contributions from Erin and Pato.  Topics include how Snow and Red's relationship on Once mirrors their fairy tale counterparts, Prince Charming’s insistence on keeping the frozen Snow White around the castle as an art piece, the 2nd part of Sleeping Beauty being a poorly-written sequel, and more. Bri recommends the websites Sur La Lune and Encyclopedia Mythica (pantheon.org)

A shoutout to the spinning wheel, Henry's consistency in approaching family dynamics, Emma's clothing parallels, a Superman II reference and more. Also, Greg is boring.

Here’s the deal – that episode was almost all filler. But we didn’t hate it. And it wasn’t the worst episode ever. And we liked it… sort of…maybe.

In this podcast we decide Rumplestiltskin needs to be on the No-Fly list and bemoan how Henry made us want Cinabon. Bri correctly predicted Charming's name was David! And every time there’s a Charming action sequence all Alex can think about is Bonnie Tyler’s Holding Out for a Hero!

We invite our listeners to let us know if they cared about the Giant’s backstory and whether they plan to see Jack the Giant Killer at the movies.

We complain about the three-week hiatus, like everyone else is!  We discuss our second book club selection, Wild Orchid, by Cameron Dokey. It’s a retelling of Mulan and we liked it quite a bit. We share some listener feedback about the book, and then we visit with the creator of Once Upon a Time Conversations, “A collection of dialogue summaries and how-it-should-have-happeneds.”

Also up for discussion are:

The kiss – the fandom continues to freak out about Gold and Cora, and Alex admits to being a shipper of “Cold”

Spoilers – do you like them, avoid them, or hate them with a passion?

Our February book club pick – the Brothers Grimm fairy tales! We’ve chosen Snow White and the Miller’s Daughter but we want you to pick a few more for us to discuss!

It’s the 12th episode of season two of Once Upon a Time, In the Name of the Brother. This is an episode where we wondered, “why are they showing us the same Frankenstein story again?” and then we rewatched it a few times and may have figured out what they may be trying to do. (Always on emphasis on may, because alas, we lack a crystal ball!). We feel like the Once writers are playing a very long game of chess and setting each piece in its place. Topics include Adam and Eddie’s statements about The Cricket Game and The Outsider (0:40-3:30), Frankenstein, the man, the myth, the monster. Plus everyone has parent issues, just like VH1, Storybrooke loves the 80’s, we’re going back to 7th grade biology class, is Regina Rumple’s daughter, is Regina manipulating Cora and red + blue = our new theory! We suspect the episode will be polarizing to the fanbase. The episode was sort of a death knell to all shippers. Instant reactions to the episode In the Name of the Brother. Topics include: Rumple and Cora kissed! Rumbelle…smash! Swan Queen…not smashed (yet)! Red…Beauty Swan Cricket Snow Whale! There must be some reason it is important to revisit the Dr. Frankenstein story…. right? We’ll have a full recap later this week for this episode. Be sure to send in any feedback you have for the episode and we can include it.

This episode features Hook getting revenge on Rumple.  Belle has lots to offer but Rumple is reluctant to let her share her knowledge or share his experiences with her. Meanwhile in Fairytale Land, Belle encounters Mulan and another monster, in a storyline that is straight out of the Xena: Warrior Princess playbook. We also discuss Snow and Charming being on House Hunters, Henry and Emma’s underwhelming reaction to the revelation that Regina did not kill Archie, the parallels between Ruby and Belle, and how the show continues to draw from soap operas with the Amnesia Twist.

We read listener feedback from Hannah, Bobbie, Timespacer, Michelle and Erin and thank our iTunes reviewers.

We're discussing The Cricket Game, the 10th episode of season two. At last Once is back from its awfully long winter hiatus! We've got so many things to say about this episode, plus we share some fan feedback from Michelle and Anna.  Topics include: what in the episode reminded us of the Pilot, the balance of power between Regina and Emma, Regina and Snow and its shifts, Emma's transformation. Plus: Rumple's a mob boss, Belle is Cindy Lou Who, Bri's got a brand new theory on Emma's magic she's dying to share, Mr. Gold has an informercial to pitch to Regina, we've got a song recommendation and is Alex our new Emma apologist?

Comments[0]

Our impression of the Cricket Game was mostly favorable. However, Regina’s misery seems to be Season 2’s Old Standby. If the writers are sadists for relishing Regina’s suffering episode after episode, does that make us all masochists?

We also discuss: Snow White and Regina; Regina, Charming and the demise of Evil Charming; Emma, Henry and Regina; the dream catcher clues and Neal; which characters looked great and which one wore a fur scarf!

Look for our in-depth discussion/recap of the episode this week 1/6/13.  Share your feedback and we can include it in our show via the following methods!

The end of Once Upon a Time’s winter hiatus is in sight! On today’s podcast we discuss our impression of Sebastian Stan’s turn in the Broadway revival of the play Picnic; feedback on the OUAT videogame question; Charming’s excessive use of pink lip gloss; new episode titles [spoiler alert] for episodes 10 through 16. (If you don't want to hear speculation based on the titles skip from 23:16 to 27:13)

We had questions about Cora and you had answers!

*What if Regina had a twin?

*Did Snow White have another run-in with Cora?

*Our listener Marcella’s theory about Rumple and Cora

*Whether Henry was a feature of the curse or a surprise

Alex and Bri compare the way Rumple is perceived and the way Regina is perceived aka “Rumple did wrong but he had good motives for everything” “everything Rumple did is in the service of finding his son vs. everything Regina did is in the service of evil.”

Finally we want to thank our listeners and wish everyone a happy new year!

We’ve got a fan episode with a discussion of our first book club pick, Fairest of All, with contributions from Erin and Mary regarding the novel’s themes and parallels with the show. Plus we’re breaking out those English major brains again and discussing some character archetypes of The Evil Queen and Red Riding Hood.  In feedback, we touch on Michelle’s theory of King George and Cora’s history, and Johana’s got an awesome question about Rumple’s motives in Queen of Hearts. Why did he just stare at Regina?  We endorse several fan things, a fun video and an essay about Ruby and a treatise on Regina’s hair and how it reflects her character. Bri wants to play a Once Upon a Time video game with all her fair heart. She shares her ideas and asks yours! All this on our 21st episode!

When reading fan message boards, Alex and Bri discovered that some fans of the show think Belle is a nagging shrew who isn't being fair to Mr. Gold. We disagree and tell you why. Also discussed are new interviews with Lana Parrilla and Josh Dallas and we conduct an interview with Red Beauty shipper, Bobbie. We end the episode with thank yous and feedback.

Interview timestamp is 11:55 to 41:56, for those you don't want shipper content.

Topics discussed include: How Mr. Gold mirrors the Beast from Beauty and the Beast , how Ruby parallels the Beast from Beauty and the Beast, the references to specific scenes in the Beauty and the Beast movie that were recreated in Child of the Moon. Also Swan Queen, Wizard of Oz references in the Doctor, Once's creators' view of shipping and Regal Cricket. Show notes: http://othersideofthemirror.com/post/37584203808/episode-20

Now begins a long 5 weeks to January 6. We cease the flailing over this episode enough to recap it in what we feel is hopefully an interesting manner. Topics include: How Alex got in trouble for our reaction episode, Regina's strings once again pulled by Rumple.  Everyone has magic lust face! Let's play "Where's Cora's heart?" and did Bri spot a callback to the pilot episode? Plus OUAT fashion parallels Cora and the curse's origin and more.  Thank you to MPessoa for the recent Itunes review!   Show notes:  http://othersideofthemirror.com/post/37235887455/episode-19-queen-of-hearts-recap

We're recapping Into the Deep, season two's eighth episode of Once Upon a Time. Topics include: we applaud Lana Parrilla's silent acting choices, and while Henry and Aurora play a seriously scary game of telephone, we critique Princess Flammable's clothing choice. Mulan has more than 1 line, Cora continues to be deliciously evil and stages her own production of Thriller, and Alex wasn't annoyed by Charming this time!  This episode is dedicated to our cat Buddha, our Russian Blue who passed Wednesday night, after 16 years of being Alex's evil queen.

We discuss revelations of Once Upon a Time's pilot script including.... Sister Mary Margaret. the visual style established in Regina's  study... the first description of Mayor Mills.... and the first description of the Evil Queen and her Jedi style.

We also talk about the changes from the script and the pilot that eventually aired. What got left out? What was amplified?  We delve into the male presence of season 2. We list the major issues Henry needs to work through. Meanwhile, Alex expects Charming to sing R Kelly's I Believe I can Fly to Henry. We wonder whether Evil Magic a lifestyle choice, if biology is destiny on this show and Bri explains how Henry is Emma's Uncle.  Show notes are available at http://othersideofthemirror.com/post/36459881279/episode-16 with all links and references.

The first of two episodes we will post during Once Upon a Time's brief hiatus. Bri announces the first book selection for her new retold Fairy Tale Book Club: Fairest of Them All by Serena Valentino, a young adult novel that reveals the origin story of the evil queen. The discussion episode for the novel will be on December 15. If you read the book, send us feedback of what you thought! Now that we are seven episodes in, Bri and Alex review the highlights and lowlights of Season 2 so far: Who is our Most Valuable Player and who is the Goat? What’s the narrative throughline for the second season of Once Upon a Time? Will Once Upon a Time go the way of Hercules or Buffy the Vampire Slayer? And prompted by a listener question, we discuss what's going with Regina, Henry, and how the show might've handled the redemption curse another way.  Curb your OUAT withdrawal with us! In this episode we recap Child of the Moon, the 7th episode of season 2 of Once Upon a Time. We briefly review what happened in Red-Handed, the first episode where we learned about Red’s backstory. Alex discusses wolf mythology across cultures and in the Brothers’ Grim as it relates to Ruby/Red.  Bri breaks down what we learned from that key scene with Gold, Regina and Henry.  There are clear parallels being drawn between Red/Ruby and Evil Queen/Regina. This episode gave us a little more information about the theories and themes of OUAT including the longing for one’s mother. Bri and Alex have another argument about David and applaud Belle for her ways with beasts. All that and more!

A fan episode with an interview with a OUAT fashion blogger, Anika. Anika runs What Would Regina Wear and Once Upon a Runaway, two blogs that post looks and outfits inspired by Once. Both are great quality blogs (though they leave you wanting too many clothes!) We talk about Regina, Once fashion, her feelings on season two, the character she’d like to give a makeover to, and more.  Listener feedback too!   Show notes available at http://othersideofthemirror.com/post/35427263309/other-side-of-the-mirror-13-look-good-in

We discuss Tallahassee, episode 6 of the second season of Once Upon a Time. We were not fans of this episode at all, and see it as ignoring the established character of Emma. Topics include our Tallahassee experience, the importance of sharing sensitive chats while climbing beanstalk, and how Emma is living the Grand Theft Auto Life, but what's her happy ending? Neal seems magical, who is, he? We say the White Rabbit. Emma's bug's origin story finally revealed. Alas, it's not Herbie. Why do both Regina and Emma have their paths set for them by men and did Bri spot a Twin Peaks homage? These topics and more.

In this episode of the podcast, we discuss The Doctor, episode 5 of the second season of Once Upon a Time. Topics include the gothic backstory of Mary Shelley, complete with actual heart; feminist theories from Frankenstein and how they are reflected in Once; and the little Easter eggs designed to convince viewers that perhaps Dr. Whale was the Wizard of Oz. Bri suggests another reading of Daniel’s advice to Regina to “love again,” while Alex thinks Daniel looks like David Bowie. Wait Mr. Gold is playing 4 characters now? And Mulan/Emma/Snow/Hook are off to climb the beanstalk. At 9:00 we end our discussion of Frankenstein, the novel. and begin talking completely about Once.

Our instant reaction to The Doctor. Sound quality is a bit less than usual because we decided to record somewhere different. Not doing that again! We recap The Crocodile, the 4th episode of the 2nd season of Once Upon a Time. We were not in love with this one, although we thought Robert Carlyle was awesome and carried the episode on his shoulders. The Powers That Be have given Rumple yet another mythological identity, as he is now the Crocodile from JM Barrie’s popular stories. We explore the history of Peter Pan and discuss how Neverland may impact the show. Alex was underwhelmed by Hook’s initial appearance, but Bri appreciated his Guyliner. Although the episode was superficially about the men, the show highlighted the thwarted dreams of Belle and Milha and gave us more background on which heart-stopping maneuvers Rumple taught Regina. We learned new revelations about the extent of Rumple’s powers: he can turn time backwards and forwards. Just like Cher! And the final scene has us anticipating the WWE cage match between tag teams Cora/Hook and Regina/Rumple. #Let’sgetreadytorumble!!!!!!!

We recap Lady of the Lake, the 3rd episode of the 2nd season of Once Upon a Time. We generally like this episode, but see it as mainly filler, aside from the brilliant mother-daughter moments and thread of parental sacrifice.  We have zero theories for this episode! However, we (briefly) discuss Halloween plans and Bri’s plan to carve a Once pumpkin. Emma questions the food of the Enchanted Forerst which leads us to conclude we missed her snark. Does Emma have knowledge of recent Disney movies and characters like Mulan? Wouldn’t it be awesome if HGTV had a “Once Upon a Castle” episode? Emma shows us what she would’ve been like on a procedural. We still can’t get into Aurora, but Mulan is pretty cool, and we are really into Lancelot. Cora fooled us all, King George is a total downer and David's parenting skills are scurtinized (again). Poor Regina!

Recapping We Are Both, the 2nd episode of season two of Once Upon a Time.  Prince David is sort of a jackass, what do you dwarves have to prove to him? David/Charming fails to impress Regina with his parenting or mailing skills. In Fairy Tale Land, we discover that like feminists everywhere, Regina wants her own life. David and Regina's parallel paths, Rumple smashes some glassware when he learns magic comes with a price and David makes a deal with the Devil. Rumple realizes his closed sign is totally useless and Emma and Snow encounter evil in a pit. Just another day in Storybrooke.

We're discussing the season premiere episode “Broken.”  Let’s face it, that entire episode was basically a fanfic filmed.  We share some songs that remind us of the Evil Queen this season.  Charley's Girl..who is she..what does the song mean? Giving props to Swan Queen Nation writers. We think Aurora, Mulan and Phillip are a hapless trio. Um..what the hell dementors? Could David take Regina in a fight? and more. Bri and Alex discuss Ginny Goodwin's ill-taken tweets regarding Swan Queen, which leads to Alex giving us a lesson in sordid tv history.  Who we and some Tumblr users would like to see character-wise on OUAT, Bri shares two fanvids, plus Regina has nobody to eat lasagna with. Bri and Alex have a wicked idea: make an Once Upon a Time podcast with a focus on Regina Mills/The Evil Queen. Introduction to the show, answering who the hell are we to make this show (we don't know), why Regina kicks ass. Alex tackles what she calls "the dueling villian" problem and discusses Regina vs. Rumple - who's the badder bad? Bri spins a tale all about The Miller's Daughter and shares some theory for OUAT, and discusses the season 1 DVD release and why she needs a Cooking with Regina Mills segment.  We love feedback, you can visit us at http://othersideofthemirror.com and email othersideonce@gmail.com!
